Development of a Turbulent Outflow During Electron-Positron Magnetic Reconnection

چکیده
The mass symmetry between the two species in electron-positron (pair) plasmas has interesting consequences for collisionless magnetic reconnection because the Hall term, which plays a crucial role in supporting fast reconnection in electron-proton plasmas, vanishes. We perform kinetic simulations of pair reconnection in systems of various sizes, show that it remains fast, and identify the reason why this occurs. For sufficiently large systems a Weibel-like temperature anisotropy instability develops in the outflow from the X-point that causes the current layer to broaden and form a Petschek-like open outflow. We discuss the parameter regimes in which pair reconnection should be fast and the implications for astrophysical pair plasmas. Subject headings: magnetic fields — methods: numerical — plasmas

The Hall fields and fast magnetic reconnection
The results of large-scale, particle-in-cell simulations are presented on the role of Hall electric and magnetic fields on the structure of the electron dissipation region and outflow exhaust during the collisionless magnetic reconnection of antiparallel fields. The simulations reveal that the whistler wave plays the key role in driving the electrons away from the magnetic x-line. Further downs...
متن کاملMMS Observation of Magnetic Reconnection in the Turbulent Magnetosheath
In this paper we use the full armament of the MMS (Magnetospheric Multiscale) spacecraft to study magnetic reconnection in the turbulent magnetosheath downstream of a quasi-parallel bow shock. Contrarily to the magnetopause and magnetotail cases, only a few observations of reconnection in the magnetosheath have been reported. The case study in this paper presents, for the first time, both fluid...
متن کاملTwo-scale structure of the electron dissipation region during collisionless magnetic reconnection.
Particle-in-cell simulations of collisionless magnetic reconnection are presented that demonstrate that reconnection remains fast in very large systems. The electron dissipation region develops a distinct two-scale structure along the outflow direction. Consistent with fast reconnection, the length of the electron current layer stabilizes and decreases with decreasing electron mass, approaching...
متن کاملTwo-Fluid MHD Simulations of Relativistic Magnetic Reconnection
We investigate the large scale evolution of a relativistic magnetic reconnection in an electron-positron pair plasma by a relativistic two-fluid magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) code. We introduce an inter-species friction force as an effective resistivity to dissipate magnetic fields. We demonstrate that magnetic reconnection successfully occurs in our two-fluid system, and that it involves Petschek-...
